The system has been in the works by Nissan for several years. Before the official release of the system earlier this year in the Nissan LEAF and Rogue, engineers fitted models of the Nissan Rogue with the technology and tested the vehicle for over 80,000 kilometers on U.S. roads.
ProPILOT Assist works by stopping, starting and slowing the vehicle down as needed while keeping the vehicle (like the Nissan LEAF) in its lane. It’s like a combination of cruise control with steering assistance and ideal for heavier traffic situations.
How ProPILOT Assist on the Nissan LEAF and Nissan Rogue Works
Daily commuters of bottleneck zones like the Deerfoot Trail in Calgary or Gateway Boulevard in Edmonton would appreciate the new ProPILOT Assist system. A camera, sensors and radar on the front of the vehicle monitor and send signals to the system. The system keeps the car centered in the lane and at a safe distance and speed from the car ahead.
The system can be turned on and off and an ideal speed can be set by the driver. During the worst sections of the bottleneck, the system is capable of fully stopping the vehicle. This doesn’t mean that the driver can multitask and do other things while the system controls the car. A hands-on detection system can tell if the driver has both hands firmly on the wheel. A touch that’s too light may set off a warning to maintain an active grip on the steering wheel.
ProPILOT Assist is capable of tracking and following curves which are common on local streets and mountain roads. And should the system detect bad weather, heavy rain or poor road conditions, it deactivates steering assistance so the driver can take full control.
The system greatly reduces driver fatigue. According to Yamaguchi, “Drivers who have experienced ProPILOT Assist always remark about the difference it makes, not realizing how many acceleration, steering and braking inputs they make under normal driving – and how much more enjoyable it is to have ProPILOT Assist help take care of it for them.”
