History of Automotive Safety

Safety features are some of the most important factors to consider when looking for a car. In the past, cars were heavy, solid, and difficult to control, which meant that fatal accidents were commonplace. It wasn't until the 1950s that Volvo introduced the first three-point seat belt, designed by Nils Bohlin, that cars got considerably safer. Soon after, the seat belt was made mandatory in all vehicles, along with the head restraint. Other safety systems such as the airbag and anti-lock brakes were also introduced to cars, increasing motor vehicles' overall safety. Today, cars are a lot safer than they were before. They commonly manage to score well in various safety evaluations, not only for passenger safety but pedestrian safety as well.

History of The Nissan GT-R

Nissan debuted the first Nissan Skyline GT-R in February of 1969 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The car won the JAF Grand Prix in its debut race and cemented itself as one of the greatest sports cars ever made. Nissan continued to make Skylines until 2002, when the R34 ceased production. In 2008, Nissan revealed the new Nissan GT-R, featuring a twin-turbo V-6 that produced 473 horsepower and an all-new all-wheel-drive system. These features combined meant the GT-R could outclass most German sports cars and American muscle cars on the market.

Safety Features of The 2021 Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is a relatively safe car, offering many modern safety features such as:

Rearview Monitor

The car features a rearview camera that activates when the reverse gear is selected. It offers predictive lines when turning the steering wheel and approximate distance markers that help navigate a challenging reverse with ease.

Front & Rear Sonar Sensors

These sensors help indicate to the driver the presence of obstacles either in front or behind the vehicle. The car displays an indication on the infotainment screen that changes colour from green to yellow to red based on the proximity to the detected obstacle. The system also beeps, with the frequency of the beeping indicating the distance to the obstacle. A continuous tone plays when the obstacle is right next to the sensor.

Zone Body Construction

This advanced body construction is designed to provide impact-absorbing structures with a high-strength cabin capable of protecting occupants in the vehicle from an impact.

Seat Belt Pretensioners

The GT-R features a system that, in case it detects a hard impact, sends a signal to the seat belt, causing it to tighten the strap around the occupant. This safety feature helps fasten the occupant to the seat, improving protection, especially from a frontal impact.

Six Air Bags

The GT-R features six separate airbags located in different regions to help cushion any impact from the passengers. The advanced airbag system also features a dual-stage supplemental front airbag that can alter its inflation rate depending on crash severity and seat belt usage.

Vehicle Dynamic Control

The vehicle dynamic control system helps maintain the steering path in normal mode. It sends more power to the appropriate wheels when it senses oversteer or understeer in R mode. This technology helps deliver more control and power when driving.

Traction Control System

This system helps improve traction by reducing the power delivered to any wheel that it detects is spinning freely. The traction control allows the wheel to regain grip to maintain control of the car.

Anti-Lock Braking System

The car features an ABS that helps prevent the wheels from locking up under heavy braking. It does this by pumping the brakes quickly, which prevents lockups.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

The EBD system can monitor the car's weight distribution and adjust the rear brake force to compensate for added passenger or cargo weight.
